It was announced last week that a bid for £110,000 scheme to make the streets of the Lime Trees estate safer has been agreed by Transport for London for funding.

Cllr Bassam Mahfouz, who has been leading on this project said, “It all started in October 2005 with a packed public meeting.  There was a strong feeling that action needed to be taken in order to tackle speeding rat-runners through the main roads of the estate.  Over the past year or so I’ve organised meetings with local residents in order to draw up plans that they felt would have the biggest impact.  We had the plans drawn and then all we needed was the funding.  The news that Transport for London is going to deliver the scheme for us is everything we had hoped for.”

Monica Smith, who has led for the local residents said, “We’re jumping for joy; what is there at the moment is useless and we need these measures to stop another accident from happening.”

The council will now carry out an official consultation early in the New Year and it is hoped that works will start as early as April 2008.
