Local Councillor Highlights Child Poverty Problems 18 April, 2007

Northolt West End Labour Councillor Bassam Mahfouz contacted the Ealing Gazette to provide them with information to highlight the level of local child poverty.
Cllr Mahfouz said,
“When I saw the child poverty statistics for Ealing I knew we’d be quite high, but this is not the sort of league table you want to be top of. This is a real problem locally with child care costs and high rents on private properties making it difficult for some parents to get off benefits and into work. The government has done a lot in the past ten years which has made it easier for parents to get into work and to make that work pay. The country’s first ever minimum wage; child tax credits; record levels of employment; free and affordable childcare places and projects like Sure Start are making a real difference in Northolt.
The level of child poverty in this country was the worst in Europe. Now child poverty is falling faster than in any other European country, but the work to eradicate child poverty continues until EVERY child has a fair start at life and the Work & Pensions Minister’s announcement a fortnight ago of further measures will mean that we continuing working towards it.”

Urgent need for traffic calming on Lime Trees estate 10 April, 2007

This evening saw an episode which re-iterated the desperate need for traffic calming on the Lime Trees estate. Residents in Laughton and Bengarth Roads in particular have been calling for their streets to be made safer because of rat-runners speeding through their residential roads. Councillors held a public meeting with residents last year after a petition was collected asking for action. Since then Cllr Bassam Mahfouz organised a series of meetings between residents and the council’s traffic management team and came up with proposals that would help alleviate the serious problems faced by residents. Transport for London (TfL) were to fund the scheme, but have since pulled out because of the Tory council’s lack of co-operation over the bus lane times. TfL will now be funding a small part of the scheme: a raised platform on the corner of Hawtrey Avenue, Langtry and Laughton Roads (see map). However, following tonight’s incident where a car veered onto the pavement and crashed through a resident’s front wall. Thank God, that no-one was hurt, but this was not the only damage the driver had caused, having damaged another vehicle and nearly killing some pedestrians in Bengarth Road only moments earlier.
Cllr Mahfouz said,
“I was shocked to see this tonight. This is meant to be a residential road and a safe route to three local schools. We need to see as much of the traffic calming measures implemented as soon as possible before someone loses their life. I’ll continue to push for funding of this important scheme as soon as possible.”
Things are looking up for Northala Fields 9 April, 2007

Readers of UB5.org.uk will recall the recent campaign for improvements to Northala Fields. Northolt Councillor & Labour’s Environment Spokesman Bassam Mahfouz recently held a meeting with the councillor responsible for the project and came to an agreement as to how to spend the remaining funds for the park.
Following the meeting Cllr Mahfouz said, “I was delighted to see that the Tories have seen that some of the areas which their Leader had proposed to spend the money on were complete rubbish. The Tories showed they didn’t understand the poject they were meddling in when they started talking about fences for the fishing lakes, as was pointed out by local residents and Labour councillors. What we have now agreed is a good settlement for the park and one that I know local residents will be happy with.”
The recent decision now alocates funds for a fishing bailiff office, which will include a refreshment area and public toilets, play equipment, furniture, pathways along the avenues and appropriate signage. To read the full details then please download the Decision Sheet (Microsoft Word)
