Ealing Council is seeking your views on how Northolt Library can improve and develop as part of its planned refurbishment in 2008.

The council is looking to increase the range of activities provided there and hope that this will mean that more people in Northolt use the library situated on the corner of Bengarth and Church Roads. Whether you use the library or not make sure you have your say as to what you would like to see it used for.

The consultation will take place from 5 to 23 February 2007, with the 23rd being the deadline for returning completed questionnaires.

Council officers will be available to discuss your ideas:

Tuesday 13 February 2-4pm

Friday 16 February 10am-1pm

Otherwise there will be a public meeting on:

Thursday 15th February from 6pm

If you would like to complete the questionnaire you can do so online or by downloading a copy of the form

Tory neglect of Northolt makes it to national publication with an article in this month’s “Green Places” magazine. Former Northala Fields architecht Peter Fink writes in the publication about how the project was let down by Ealing’s Tories under the title, “Shattered Dreams”

Fink talks about the Northala Fields that could have been, as envisaged by the previous Labour administration, writing about the project that would have seen “a sustainable exemplar 21st century park with a wide range of facilities supported by a long-term endowment fund for maintenance and a provision of free, inclusive educational, art and sport programming.”

Ealing’s Miser Puts Tax on Fun 3 February, 2007

Ealing Summer tentSelf-proclaimed ‘Minister of Fun’ Nigel Sumner announced last Tuesday night that Ealing’s Summer Festival in Walpole Park would begin charging for entry from this summer.

The festival features the best live music, comedy, and family entertainment over five weeks, and in the past no entrance fee has been charged for the main events. The Ealing Jazz Festival was the largest free jazz event in the UK, attracting world-famous jazz names.

But now Cllr Sumner, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing has announced that entrance to the park will no longer be free, with festival-goers being charged £1.00 per person every day.

Labour councillors are concerned that this charge is only the first step in a move that will change the distinctive nature of the free summer event. Cllr Bassam Mahfouz, Labour’s Environment Spokesman, said:

“I go to the Ealing Summer Festival in Walpole Park every year, there are people there of all ages and its great to see families being able to enjoy themselves at a free event. Placing an entry fee could damage the fantastic family-friendly atmosphere by stopping families from coming along and enjoying themselves.

The Tories have always said how important this festival is to them, but at the first opportunity they get they are trying to put people off and what is there to stop them increasing this charge year on year. ‘Minister of Fun’, Cllr Sumner is swiftly becoming Ealing’s ‘Minister of Misery’. By introducing this charge, he will be excluding the less well-off and the event won’t reflect the diversity that makes Ealing a great place to live.”
